If your UTV isn’t functioning the way that it should, your first step should always be to locate the source of the problem. Once you’ve properly diagnosed the issue, you’ll have a better idea of where you need to focus your attention and what kinds of parts you might need. If you are not sure where to start, check out Road Track & Trail’s guide to UTV troubleshooting.

Battery Issues

If your UTV’s starter isn’t functioning properly, it might mean that the battery is dead or undercharged. While an undercharged battery can be charged using a tender, a dead battery will need to be replaced. If charging or replacing the battery doesn’t help, the problem might lie with the terminal connection. Apply grease to the terminals, treat them with an anti-corrosive substance, and securely tighten them. If your UTV uses a refillable battery and the electrolyte levels are dropping more quickly than they should, check the battery for cracks and holes.

Engine Trouble

If your UTV’s engine isn’t putting out as much power as it should, possible causes include a clogged injector, an empty fuel tank, a dirty or broken spark plug, a ruined ignition coil, or a wrecked crankshaft position sensor. Go through these parts one by one to make sure that there is nothing wrong with any of them.

If your engine has a tendency to overheat too easily, one possible cause is a malfunctioning coolant system. Check your coolant levels, and flush the system if you find evidence of corrosion. If this doesn’t help, check that the radiator cap and motor-driven fan are still intact and functioning.

If you have to struggle to get your UTV’s engine to start, low fuel flow might be the culprit. Inspect your fuel tank, filter, electric fuel pump, and injector. The problem could be something as simple as a loose fuel tank cover letting water into the fuel system. If all of these parts come up clean, the problem might be a weak battery, so double-check the electrical system as well.

General Problems

If your UTV’s brakes are grinding together or otherwise not working correctly, possible causes include low brake oil, air in the braking system, or a plate or clippers that need to be tightened. If you hear an unusual noise from your transmission, try replacing the gears. Finally, if your vehicle isn’t offering as much power as it should, check that your CVT transmission isn’t sliding. This problem can also be caused by a malfunctioning parking brake or disc brakes that aren’t uncoupling completely.
