Stop by Road Track and Trail in Big Bend, Wisconsin so we can help you with the bike buying process and show you some of the great used street bikes we have available.
Get Licensed
Every state has its own laws regarding motorcycles, but most require you get a special license or endorsement, and Wisconsin is no different. If you’re going to start riding a motorcycle, you either need a class M motorcycle license or motorcycle instruction permit. This will take a little time and money to get, but there’s no getting around this if you want to ride a street bike.
Training
There’s a lot to learn when it comes to riding a street bike. Everything from braking to accelerating to turning is going to be vastly different from what you may be used to. Practice is going to be key, but given the high stakes, you may not want to try to figure things out on your own. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) offers lots of programs that will pair you with a qualified instructor so you can learn from an expert exactly how to ride efficiently and safely. This can not only help you be more confident and relaxed while on the road, but some insurance companies offer discounts to riders who have completed these courses. Even after you learn the basics, the MSF offers more advanced courses to continue you learning for as long as you’re riding.
Gear
Your prep shouldn’t just revolve around the street bike itself. You also need to make sure you have the right gear to match. Sometimes this isn’t just about safety, it’s about making sure you follow all the right laws. For example, in the state of Wisconsin, you must wear some sort of protective eyewear, whether that be a face shield, goggles, or something else. However, unlike many other states in the union, if you’re a licensed rider over the age of 18, you are not required to wear a helmet. This by no means indicates that you shouldn’t wear one.
Your brain is one of the most important parts of your body, and even minor bumps and injuries can have lifelong consequences. Make sure you wear a helmet that covers not just the top of your head, but your entire head, face, and jaw as well. In addition to covering your head, you’ll also want to make sure the rest of your body is protected. Wear durable long sleeve shirts and pants, as well as sturdy boots and gloves.
