Why You Need a Helmet
It’s not uncommon to view a powerful machine like a powersports vehicle as indestructible. However, it’s important to understand that they can be quite dangerous when they’re not operated correctly. One essential component is to wear a helmet that offers maximum protection. You don’t want your head to be exposed and vulnerable when you’re tackling rough terrain with a massive machine. As an added perk, a helmet will protect your face from bugs and keep you more alert by reducing wind fatigue.
Different Types of Helmets
For those who are seasoned veterans, you’re probably already aware that there are several types of helmets to choose from. How do you know which one is right for you? First and foremost, you want a helmet that’s been designed to meet Department of Transportation standards with high crash test ratings. This means that it’s capable of withstanding serious impacts and can handle extreme sports riding.
There are half, open, and full-face helmets. Each option offers a different level of protection. If you’re riding a UTV or a quad, you’ll want to look for a full-face helmet that also comes with a face shield. If you prefer the open style, don’t forget to add a pair of goggles for eye protection.
Since there isn’t really a market that’s fully dedicated to powersports helmets, you’ll have to look for those made for motorcycle and motocross riding. The most protective option will be a motorcycle helmet that comes with a full-face shield and ample padding. Keep in mind they’re quite heavy and can be especially hot in warm water, but they’ll offer the most protection in a fall or collision.
Comfort & Fit
One of the most challenging aspects of choosing helmet is finding one that’s comfortable and fits well. Oftentimes, each manufacturer will have its own way of determining sizes. This means what fits you in one brand may not fit in the same size from another brand. Fortunately, manufacturers also tend to offer helmet sizing charts to help you determine what will work best for you. In order to get the measurement of your head, use a tailor’s measuring tape to measure the circumference of your head just an inch above your eyebrows. Use this number to find the right fit.
When you’re trying on powersports helmets, make sure that it’s going to offer maximum protection. Tighten the chin strap and wiggle your head around a bit. There shouldn’t be an excessive amount of extra room. If there is, you need to go down a size. Make sure the helmet does not slide off without undoing the strap. If it does, this is another sign that you need a tighter fit. Last but not least, if you can fit a finger between your forehead and the inside of the helmet, it’s too big. The right size will feel slightly snug without pinching or causing pain.
