Trail Snowmobiles
Snowy mountain trails are great for snowmobilers looking for some twists and turns without trekking across too much open county. Trail snowmobiles are the best at this kind of riding, bringing plenty of performance to the field without loading down the sled with bells and whistles you might not need. They’re lightweight and configured to best perform on well groomed trails where conditions are more predictable.
These are great starter sleds, since newer riders will want to stick to trails anyway. They tend to offer more basic frames compared to other types on this list, so while you still get features like electric starters or reverse levers, they won’t come with the more specialized features you’ll read about later on.
Touring Snowmobiles
These sleds are engineered for ergonomics, giving riders more comfort over the course of longer trips or a day on the trail. They tend to have larger windscreens and can operate in rougher conditions than their trail sled cousins. That means riding longer tracks for a smoother ride, and they have enough room for a two-up seat so you can bring along a friend. More powerful suspension systems support this extra weight, but this also increases the overall size and weight of these snowmobiles. That makes them a poor choice if you’re dealing with fresh powder but excellent at groomed trails and established routes.
Mountain Snowmobiles
Mountain snowmobiles pick up where trail and touring models leave off, with features that make riding fresh powder a dream. They’re longer and tend to be much lighter in weight than touring models to more easily float across fresh snow. Their tracks are also more suited for this type of riding, with larger lugs for gaining traction more easily in light powder.
Mountain sleds are also designed to deal with higher altitudes and the loss of power engines experience with the thinner air. To compensate, they’re equipped with higher horsepower engines and longer skis for increased maneuverability and handling on the steeper mountain terrain.
Crossover Snowmobiles
If you need to move between snowy conditions, a crossover sled is going to be your new best friend. They combine elements of these other types of snowmobile to give riders the versatility of choice. With lightweight chassis and long tracks, you can power through powder just as well as the groomed trails. A robust suspension system smooths out the ride no matter the type of snow, and many models provide additional features for tackling a wide variety of terrain. Experienced sled operators will find the crossover class a great compromise between other types of vehicles.
