Tips to Extend the Life of Your ATV
Whether used for trail riding, property management, hunting, or another purpose, ATVs tend to endure heavy wear. While most quad models are built to handle the rigors of outdoor conditions, that doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t take care of your machine. Good maintenance habits can extend your ATV’s lifespan by years, so follow these tips from Road Track & Trail to help you get the most out of your vehicles.
Change the Oil and Coolant
Like any motor vehicle, you should get into the habit of frequently checking your ATV’s oil. If the oil is dark and smudgy, it is time for an oil change. Check your owner’s manual to determine what kind of oil is compatible with your model. While you are at it, you can also check your coolant levels, as well as the condition of the coolant itself. If the coolant appears discolored and has a burnt odor, it is time for a change.
Clean Your ATV Regularly
While ATVs are built to handle dirt and grime, going too long between cleanings can lead to problems. Not only does caked-on dirt encourage rust, but particles can clog up the filters and wreak havoc on the engines. Remember that a quick wash from time to time helps your quad look and run its best.
Check the CV Belt
Most modern ATVs utilize a CV belt transmission, and like all parts of your ATV, the belt can become worn down over time. Unfortunately, it can be difficult for a non-mechanic to tell just by looking that the belt needs replacing, so watch for performance issues and the smell of burning rubber. If something feels off, talk to a service professional.
Treat Your Gas
Before putting your ATV into storage, always add some fuel stabilizer to the tank. Not doing so will result in the fuel breaking down and clogging your fuel lines, causing serious problems.
Inspect Your Nuts and Bolts
Get into a habit of inspecting your ATV’s nuts and bolts before a ride to make sure that none of them are loose. You should also check the rubber padding that surrounds parts like the drive shafts and air intake. If you think it is necessary, follow this up by greasing the bearings and pivot points on your frame and suspension.
Ride Wisely
The best thing you can do to ensure a long operational lifespan for your ATV is simply to ride wisely. Know your limits, and the limits of your vehicle, and don’t recklessly try to push past them.
