Springtime is right around the corner. Soon it will be time to take the bike out of storage, dewinterize it, and dust off your riding gear to go take the first ride of the year. To help you get back into the swing of things, here are Road Track & Trail’s tips to spring motorcycle riding.

Take a Class

If you haven’t ridden in a few months, consider taking a quick refresher class. Even if you are not a beginner, there are plenty of intermediate and advanced classes that can help you improve your riding skills. You may learn some new techniques, or be re-introduced to old ones that you have forgotten. Regardless, be careful out on the road. The first few rides after a long period off the bike are always a bit less safe.

Gear Check

Once you’ve completed the dewinterization process for your motorcycle, do a gear check. Inspect your helmet for pests and any sign of wear and tear. Some people choose to get a fresh helmet every three to five years. Make sure that your riding boots, gloves, and other gear is in good condition and can support you on a ride.

Warm Up

Long periods of idleness can be bad for a bike. Before committing to a major trip, take your bike out for a quick 5 to 10 minute drive to make sure that everything is still working smoothly. If you notice any performance issues or strange noises, it is time to schedule a service appointment.

Be Visible

No matter the time of year, you will always have to contend with distracted drivers. However, since so few bikers ride during the winter, some motorists may have forgotten how to safely share the road with bikers come springtime. Be sure to wear bright clothing and use reflective strips on your bike, especially when riding at dusk or in foggy conditions.

Stay Alert

There is a lot for a biker to look out for during the spring. For example, many regions experience heavy rainfall during the spring, which leaves the road slick. Animals are also more active, increasing the risk of a collision. As always, the best way to stay safe is to stay alert and be ready to react appropriately to any situation that comes your way.

Don’t Overdo it

A long winter can leave both you and your bike a bit rusty. Don’t assume that you will be able to go back to riding the same way you previously have right out of the gate. Luckily, all it will take is a few practice runs and maybe some lessons to get you back to where you were before, but take it easy on those first few rides.
