Side by Side Trail Riding Tips
There are few things as fun and exciting as tearing up the trails in your side by side. However, risky behaviors while riding can result in serious injury to you or others. Follow these UTV trail riding tips from the experts at Road Track and Trail to help stay safe out on the trail.
Stick to Designated Trails
Not only will wandering off the designated trail likely result in damage to the local vegetation, but it’s also extremely risky. If your side by side encounters a ditch or other obstacle it’s not equipped to handle, you can get seriously hurt. On top of that, going off trail is illegal when riding and on state or federal land and will result in a serious fine if you are caught doing it. Remember, those trails exist for a reason!
Safety Equipment
Everyone riding in your side by side needs to be equipped with the proper safety gear, including you. This includes a DOT-certified helmet, goggles with anti-fog/UV protection, and full-length clothing that will help protect your skin in case of an accident.
Be Polite
Following trail riding etiquette isn’t just the polite thing to do, it also helps keep you and others safe. Always use the proper right of way when you encounter other riders and inform them of how many people are following after you. If you’re the one deferring, move over as far as you safely can. Alert other riders to poor and/or dangerous trail conditions. If you spot a rider stopped on the side of the trail, take a second to make sure that they’re just taking a break rather than in need of assistance.
