Indian Motorcycle® History

Indian Motorcycle® is one of the oldest motorcycle manufacturers in the United States. Though the company has changed owners many times, some things have never changed. Indian® motorcycles are still some of the most reliable and easy to ride on the market. Early Years

In 1901, the former-bicycle manufacturer known as the Indian Motorcycle Company produced its first prototype motorcycle. The brand saw great success throughout the pre-World War I years, partially due to its unique sense of style and partially due to a series of victories on the racing circuit. 

Tumultuous Times

During World War I, Indian sold most of its motorcycles to the US government for army usage. This had the unfortunate side effect of leaving many dealers without enough bikes to sell. Other motorcycle manufacturers sprung up to meet demand, and Indian slowly lost ground to its rivals. The company was liquidated in 1953 and all production ceased.  

Current Era

Despite the company being defunct, there was still a cadre of loyal fans who wanted to buy an Indian® motorcycle. The decades that followed saw the Indian Motorcycle® brand change hands eight times. The current owner, Polaris, has focused on producing a lineup of Indian® motorcycles that mix a classic sense of style with modern performance and features.
