Motorcycle Boots
One of the most overlooked parts of motorcycle-riding gear is a pair of sturdy riding boots. Many people decide that, having spent enough on the rest of their gear, they can wear worn-out sneakers or cheap boots and be good to go. However, this is not the case. Motorcycle boots are an essential part of safe and responsible riding, which is why Road Track & Trail has provided you with this guide to help demystify the purchasing process. We’re in Big Bend, WI, so bring us any questions you have about how to get yourself and your bike equipped for your next ride!
Why Are They Necessary?
When you’re on your bike, you’re going at high speeds over hard pavement. Your feet are exposed to a number of hazards from engine heat to flying debris, much like the rest of your body. Since you’re going at much faster speeds than you would on a bicycle, you need more protection in the event of a crash. You also want footwear that provides you with good grip and stability.
Sandals and tennis shoes are a bad idea when you’re riding your motorcycle. You need closed-toed shoes that will give you more traction and more protection. Some riders choose to wear their work boots, and while this is better than open-toed shoes or sneakers, it’s not ideal since they aren’t designed with the unique needs of a motorcyclist in mind.
Motorcycle boots have grippy, slip-resistant soles, and reinforced toes, made of strong materials meant to take a beating. To give yourself the ultimate protection, invest in gear made specifically for your ride.
Consider Your Bike Type
The type of bike you ride plays a factor in the type of footwear you’ll want to acquire. Certain riding styles may lead you over different types of terrain, for example. If you’re on a dirt bike, you want boots that can handle mud or hard-packed ground.
When you’re touring, you want to prioritize comfort over everything, which includes your feet. Look for a pair that’s got breathable liners, temperature regulating material and removable footbeds. You may also want waterproofing for long-distance riding or commuting in any type of weather.
On a cruiser, you’ll be in a lot of highway traffic and going at higher speeds over hard roads full of hazards like potholes, so you’ll need to be protected from road damage with strong-enough footwear to protect your feet and ankles in a crash.
Get The Fit Right
You’ll want your riding boots to fit you well without being uncomfortable. When you’re trying on a pair, wiggle your toes around to make sure the toe box offers your feet enough space. You don’t want to feel your toes press against the front of the boot and you shouldn’t feel any pinching sensations. When in doubt, opt for a pair that’s a bit loose instead of a bit too tight. You can always add thick socks or insoles to fill the space!
Break in your boots before you head out on a ride by wearing them around the house or going on errands while you wear them. After about a week, your boots should be worn in well enough for you to hit the road while wearing them!
