BMW® Motorcycle History

As you may already be aware, BMW® first began as an aircraft engine manufacturing company (hence their logo that’s supposed to look like propellers against a blue sky). What you may not know is that only five years after their founding, BMW® started building their first motorcycles, spurred largely by the ban on German aircraft manufacturing following the end of World War I. Initially, like most early motorcycles, it was more a motorized bicycle in that they attached an industrial engine to a pedal bike.

The Second World War saw a halt in motorcycle production. Not only were the facilities damaged or destroyed, but the post-WWII treaty forbade BMW® from continuing their motorcycle manufacturing. It wasn’t until 1947 that production resumed and there was a lot of ground to cover to get back to where they once were.

The next few decades were a bit rocky, especially with sales and production split between East and West Germany, but today they produce some of the most powerful motorcycles in the world--because what else would you expect from a manufacturer that shares its home with the Autobahn? They’ve created a wider range of products to suit a wider range of riders, so you’ll be able to find the right motorcycle no matter how long you’ve been riding.
